City Star Plaza is a complex of museums, shops and catering establishments on the premises of a closed factory in Xiacheng District. It is designed by three architectural firms in USA, Switzerland and UK.

The 35.3-hectare factory has nine buildings and two vintage locomotives, one made in Hungary. The architects decided to preserve them for the planned 100,000-square-meter City Star Plaza. A chimney will be kept as the landmark.

The whole project will be completed in 2019, about the same time when Metro Line 5 is put into service. The subway will have a station near the plaza.

A pavilion built entirely with bamboo will be a highlight of the City Star Plaza. The two-storey building with a floor space of 299 square meters is a gift from the Goethe Institute of Germany after the World Expo 2010 Shanghai.
