About 1,000 government employees, security guards and sanitation workers became volunteers yesterday to serve visitors in the West Lake scenic area. They all wear a leaf-like badge pinned to the shirt.
These volunteers have one thing in common: They can speak simple English and provide help to foreign tourists.
The West Lake Scenic Area Administration mobilized the volunteers to help improve tourism services around the lake with a perimeter of 13.8 kilometers. The number of volunteers will increase to 10,000 in October.
Meanwhile, the city also set up a training base for volunteers who will serve at major sports events and international conventions in the future.
