City buffeted by gale-force winds as cold front invades

Visitors encounter gale on the Broken Bridge yesterday afternoon. Hangzhou Meteorological Bureau issued a gale yellow alert at 12:30pm yesterday, saying most of the city would be hit by gale of up to 70 kilometers an hour from the north due to arrival of a cold front.

New railway to bring Yellow Mountain closer

Construction of bridges to connect five railway tunnels in the mountains of Tonglu County is near completion while six tunnels in neighboring Jiande County are under construction. They are all for the 265-kilometer Hangzhou-Huangshan Railway, which is expected to go into service next year. Huangshan is a tourist city at the foot of the famous Yellow Mountain in Anhui Province. The new railway can shorten the trip to one and a half hours. At a cost of 33.8 billion yuan (US$5.8 billion), the railway will have 10 stations, two in urban Hangzhou and the rest in Fuyang, Tonglu, Jiande and Chun'an in Zhejiang Province and in Sanyang, Jixi, Yixian and Huangshan in Anhui Province.

Rare animal rescued from Qiandao Lake
