This is the first Chinese instrumental concert in drama. It perfectly combines Chinese opera with traditional Chinese instruments. By using the dynamic musical elements of the Han, the Uygur, Kazak and the Tajik, the concert displays the splendid cultures of different ethnic groups along the Silk Road.
The performance is based on the historical story of Xuanzang’s pilgrimage. Xuanzang was a Chinese Buddhist monk, scholar, and translator who travelled to India in the sixth century and described the interaction between Chinese Buddhism and Indian Buddhism during the early Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907). He not only brought considerable Buddhist scriptures back into China, but also translated many of them, which greatly contributed to the prosperity of Buddhism in ancient China.
